It is a very sad day for me...I have decided to close the Plum Tree Antiques at the end of the year. Including myself as an owner, The Plum Tree has been in business for nearly 16 years.

I appreciate all the support from my great customers and have enjoyed my years as owner.

This past year has been a real struggle as I know it has for a lot of you, and this has been a hard decision for me to make, however at this time it feels like the right one.

I will still be selling antiques at The Scott Antique Market every month so if you get a chance, please come by and see me. I will also be selling at my friend Wendy's (Ms. Wendy's antiques) shop in Senoia and who knows, maybe one day I will be back.

Please don't forget about Bob and Mark (Blumen Trio), trying to make a new start in their old location at 66 Griffin Street, they have a wonderful selection of merchandise and I am afraid they may get forgotten being that far from the square, I know they can count on the great folks of McDonough.

We still have a great selection of gifts and Christmas decor available so please stop in to take a look. I will post any sales that are coming up on the blog.

Wow, I can't believe my dream is finally coming true... Wendy Ms. Wendy's Antiques, Sharon and I are headed to Texas to sell our wares at the Warrenton Antique Preview Show in September.

We have all talked about it from time to time and Sharon and I even planned a trip a few years back but never planned far enough ahead.

After several days of selling we will be heading to the Marburger Farms and Round Top Antique shows to buy or at least to ogle all of the fabulous booths. I can tell you there are so many talented vendors at this show, the booths themselves are a work of art.

I know it has been a while since our last blog post, I feel like time is getting away from me and there are not enough hours in a day!

I gave up my space down at High Cotton in Woodbury not for any reason but not having enough time.

If you have not been down there yet, it is an incredible store with lots of treasures to be found.

The Plum Tree is filled to the brim with lots of primitive furniture pieces

The bench below measures 8 -1/2" feet long, it is circa 1850's. Used in a primitive church, when preaching was over, the back flipped up and it made into a harvest table for Sunday dinners at church.

Each end of the bench has hand forged hardware . There are bolts that slide in to each end and the center when being used as a bench and when turned up the end bolts slide into the sides for support.

This bench is quite a unique find and very rare.

I have just completed a new group of vintage look belt buckles

These are all one of a kind

Here is something you don't see every day. This beautiful cedar chest was covered in brown paint when I found it. I had no idea the jewel I would find once I cleaned it up. It is a Roos Sweetheart chest in an Art Deco design, the top back piece has a clock with a brass surround featuring the signs of the zodiac. On either side of the clock and down the front of the chest itself is the most beautiful wood inlay. The inside is clean and all cedar lined, plus it has a drawer in the bottom for extra storage. Original electric clock has been converted to a battery operated.

This is one of my favorite pieces of all that I found. It is an early 1800's corner cupboard with wonderful old blue/green paint inside. It has a wood latch at the bottom and more shelves for storage. All hand forged hardware.

This early jelly cupboard is in wonderful condition and actually almost came home with me for my kitchen but it wouldn't fit the space. I just love the color and would look great with the doors open displaying your vintage quilt collection.

If you have not seen the movie The Blind Side with Sandra Bullock, you may not be aware of these watches. They are inspired by the watch that Sandra is wearing in the movie. Besides the rainbow of colors shown here, we also have brown, black and white which will be in this week.

If you are looking for a piece of furniture to fit into a small space, this little marble top piece would be perfect. It would make a great end table next to a sofa or night stand with lots of little drawers for storage.

Another early primitive piece, this dry sink has a zinc liner.

Some of you may be aware that I have Lisa Souers website listed on my favorite blogs list, well now I carry her wonderful line of handmade jewelry. Each piece contains original pieces of paper from vintage books, so no two are alike. I love to layer two or three pieces together!

I just brought in two new dealers to the store that create some of the most beautiful jewelry I have seen. This line is completely hand beaded, the work that is put into her designs are unbelievable and she only uses the best beads and natural materials she can find.

The other new line of jewelry is also handmade and features, necklaces, earrings, bracelets, anklets and key chains from fun to funky... they have been a big hit.

I hope everyone one had a safe and Merry Christmas. The Plum Tree is gearing up for a new year with loads of new furniture pieces and accessories. We will be hauling out the paint supplies near the middle of January to give the store a fresh coat of paint and clear away the dust balls from this past year. Business is doing very well and we look forward to another great year here in McDonough.

Well, it's about that time when the retail stores start reminding us how many days are left until Christmas. Black Friday is upon us and for those that are fortunate enough to still be working in this tough economy, please remember this is the season of giving not just gifts, but of ourselves.

Just a few small gestures will make the difference to someone who has come on hard times so please remember those who are less fortunate by using some of these suggestions we may all know but could use a reminder...

Have your children select a toy in good condition they no longer play with and donate it to a children's shelter
Purchase a new toy or two and give to Toys for Tots... again let your children get involved
Adopt a family for the holidays...check with local churches for families in need
Volunteer at a soup kitchen, and carry it out all year long
Donate your gently used coats, scarves and gloves to a collection sight or start one yourself
Collect canned good for your local Can-A-Thon
Check in on elderly neighbors and invite them to spend the holidays with your family
Visit your local nursing homes, at the holidays, many people are forgotten
Donate items to your local animal shelter, better yet adopt a homeless dog or cat
Remember our Soldiers fighting for our freedom who won't be with their families, not eating a huge turkey dinner, watching football or sleeping in a warm bed.

Three of us from the Plum Tree have taken a few spaces there and as you can see by the following pictures, we have quite a bit there already!

High Cotton is having its Grand Opening and Holiday Open House on Saturday December 5th from 10:00 am until 7:00 pm. For those of you who like me had never heard of Woodbury, it is really easy to get to. From downtown Fayetteville, go south on Highway 85 approximately 35 miles until you get to Highway 18. Turn right and it will be about 1 mile or less down on the left side of the street in a big brick building.

As I was telling you in the last blog, McDonough is holding a scarecrow contest which had to be ready by tomorrow, (Friday) so today Kellie, Sharon, Joy, Denise and I worked on the front porch of the store to transform it into Hooterville, better known as Green Acres to all of you 50 something folks like me.

We decided to do this 60's television show for our scarecrows because we were allowed to choose a theme.

The contest will start tomorrow and the winner will be chosen on the 23rd which is also the day of our Fall Harvest Days. The Plum Tree along with other patrons on and around the square will be open until 9:00 PM. That evening you can enjoy music on the square with ARH Band from 6:00-9:00 too so come on out with the family, enjoy a great meal at one of our many downtown restaurants and stroll the quaint shops that McDonough has to offer.

On Saturday, October 24th, McDonough will be hosting it's annual Chili Cook-Off in the Square from 12:00 until 5:00 PM. This is another event you won't want to miss!

Lots of events are planned for the holidays so stay tuned for times and dates. You can pick up

a calender of events from any of the merchants in town or at the welcome center.

The Plum Tree blog is supposed to be something where I can show you what new pieces we have as well as what is going on in our little town, not to get on my soapbox. However, this month has been a little more then fun for me.

Remember a few weeks ago I showed you a photo of four adorable little kittens that were born at the Plum Tree. They were the result of someone that does not take proper care of her pets. Well another kitten was born as the result of another cat of hers that is not spayed. He was probably born a few weeks earlier then the other four who's mother was killed.

The other four I surrendered to a kitten rescue where hopefully they will get good homes. This irresponsible pet owner has one more that will be having kittens any day if she hasn't yet. Of course she has a few males of her own as well as every male cat in the county hanging around.

The statistics are staggering on strays and cats that are not spayed or neutered. An adult female cat can reproduce up to 4 times per year, with an average of 1-3 kittens. 97% of those kittens will be female. They can start family's as young as 7 months. Spaying can be done at 4 months and discounts can be gotten through your local veterinarian.

I did not want another cat, nor do I need another one, however when you look into their sweet little faces and know what their life would be if you were to let them alone to spread disease's and die an untimely death the answer is very clear.

We sold lots of garden decor

Today four sweet little babies came into my life. I am not happy about this seeing that I am not the owner of their mama.

The owner of the mama refused to take proper care of her and therefore she produced yet another litter of kittens her third. Unfortunetely she was killed two days ago and since these babies were born at the Plum Tree, I am now taking care of them.

Only about 4 weeks old, they still need to bottle fed, which is quite a chore in itself. However, since I am an animal lover and have five of my own, I will nurture these until I find them a good home.

If anyone our there is interested in one of these sweet little babies, please email me at the Plum Tree. Oh and by the way, the owner of the mama also has 2 other females that will be producing babies any day

This weeks blog is the last one until we get back from our road trip. Yes, it is time to get serious so we are heading out to Arkansas by way of Memphis Tn. Our trip will also take us to Missouri and a visit to Curious Sofa.

Denise will be running the store until we get back and for those who know her, knows she will take good care of you.

We are also expecting an order to arrive next week of some wonderful pieces so please get by to see them. Here is a sneak peek of some of the pieces that will be arriving.

One of our Dealers, Denise and her husband were stationed here for a while but now have the chance to go back to Germany. While she lived there in the past, she collected quite a few antique and vintage pieces. However to make her trip back a little lighter she is clearing out a lot of her collections. Well it won't be long now, I am looking forward to yet another road trip. This time I am heading back to Arkansas via Nashville. I have always been lucky at finding some great pieces out there and at one auction in particular I don't want to miss.

Somewhere between Renaissance Revival and Art Deco lies a plethora of styles and numerous periods in time.

Of course in antiques, the past is not always the same. This week I wanted to introduce you to a little more of the Steampunk style. Writer Richard Morgan says, "Steampunk is the future as dreamt by the past."

The definition of Steampunk is diverse enough to incorporate everything from Victorian to Modern, with generous doses of futurism, machine age, and romance thrown in for good measure.

It is a combination of old factory gears, magnifying glasses, vintage lab wares and hourglasses. It's a setting for steamer trunks, antique globes, aged brass and dark woods from an eerie old library.

Items such as apothecary jars, botanical specimens and glass cloches serve as reminders of the beginning of modern medicine and surveyor's lamps, factory pendants, industrial antiques, and mercury glass add a science fiction expression.

Steampunk is not for everyone, and we wouldn't expect it to be. Moreover, this is only one of the varieties of styles and collections available at The Plum Tree.

This week we are really excited about getting outside to work in the garden at The Plum Tree. I have placed my order for new concrete statuary, there are a lot of new pieces available this year that I am really excited about as well as some new stains we are trying out.

Joy has been busy planting some very unusual containers with some beautiful succulents and she is getting our outdoor bunkhouse ready as well.

After tomorrow, we will have our very own greenhouse in the garden ~ be sure to come by and take a look while Joy creates her outdoor magic.

Steampunk
Steampunk...what the heck is that you might ask, it's different things to different people. To me it means a complimentary mix of found items such as gears, knobs, iron, wood, or any material which is disposed of today. It is thinking out of the box, honoring the past. It is a beautiful Victorian ruffled blouse covered by tux and tails. Or soft velvet skirt with worn out surveyors boots. It is a beautiful long necklace with parts and pieces of old furniture hardware, watches, glasses, keys and beads. It is an era when people worked hard, made things last & had an appreciation for the craftsmanship. Steampunk is industrial but not unlike any piece of antique furniture...built to last.

This past week, my husband and I went back up to Bristol VA/TN to pick up a few items I had to leave behind on my trip because I did not bring my trailer and my car was packed. We left the day it snowed here in Georgia. My friends were sending me pictures of the snow, and here I was traveling and not seeing anything but rain. I was so jealous, we were all the way up in Franklin NC and all it did was rain. Well I finally did get my wish because as soon as we started over a mountain, it was snowing so hard and fast that the lines in the road were soon covered and cars were slipping all over the place. We got across safely and although it was scary there for awhile, it was so beautiful.

The following two pictures are the reason we traveled back north, I did not know it at the time I saw these pieces that they had some great history to them, Gayle the owner of the shop where I purchased them told me. The first one is a Baggage check-in desk from the Bristol VA train station it is from the late 20's early 30's and the second photos shows the travelers bench from the same station. These are both real treasures and I am so glad I went back for them. The check-in desk has already sold, but I wanted to show it to you.

The train lantern is one of the last one's made for the adlake kero company. It is a 300 model and is all original. It dates from the 60's. After this one was used they continued to make the lanterns, however they were for souvenir use only.

One of my dealers brought in the photo above and these great old train cars to complete our train station look.

This piece is made from all found parts to be recycled into this wonderful necklace. I took three photos so you could see all the pieces used, it is called "Chase Life", I love the way she used the old drawer pull as a base to hang all the trinkets from.

Here is another piece with all kinds of found treasures on it.

I just love all the vintage ladies attire and accessories. Everything from hats, purses, prints, and mannequins. Just a little bit of everything.

This piece is an old iron deskwith glass top. So unique, it fit right into our garden room. There is a slot above the knee hole and down the left side there are slots to store papers, and books. It could even be used as a planting table, when you're finished just rinse it off.

Well, we made it back from our trip to the mountains...most of the places we visited in the past did not let us down when it came to finding great treasures. So good in fact, I am headed back that way again this weekend to pick up some things left behind because of room in the car.

I wanted to show you pictures of some of the things I did bring back like the awesome old engraving print of snow owls, however it was only on the wall about 30 minutes before it was snatched up. Then there the was the two hand colored photos of victorian children in great old frames...gone! So then I was going to take photos of the great collection of neat old alarm clocks...gone, gone and gone.

Anyway, I try not to dissapoint, so take a look at what we still have in the store and if you see something you like give me a call.

Shorter days are passing by & with each day no matter the weather we notice the sun is staying in the sky longer.

Week by week the days get longer, although we may not be aware of the change we notice leaves budding out on bushes and trees.

The grass starts turning green and fragile flowers start pushing through the warm earth. Soon it will be Spring and as we dust off the cold and dreary days, we start planning on what seems like a brand new year.

Although it has been really frigid outside the last few days, we are all looking forward to warmer weather. I love this look, these are fingerless gloves or hand warmers and can be worn with short sleeves, under or over a long sleeve shirt or as cuffs to peek out beneath a sleeve. Changes are Coming

I know it is probably the coldest it has been in a while, however we are already in Spring mode at the Plum Tree. Since there are so many of you that love gardening and the vintage garden look, we have decided to create a year round garden oasis right inside the store. I have already asked my dealers to start looking for neat vintage garden pieces from planters to swings and everything in between and believe me when they get assignments they don't dally.

So watch as our garden starts to grow & the weather gets toasty warm.

We have a new artist at the Plum Tree, I am excited to introduce you to Crystal of My Felt Food.

Crystal came to me and asked if I might be interested in offering her line of wool felt food in the store. Of course I am always looking for new artists to promote so I said sure. I was so excited when I saw her actual pieces and have to say the are already selling quite well.

She designed these pieces for the Plum Tree which we call the Plum Tree tea.

Each piece is handmade and are really a work of art, she even made a plum tea teabag.

I have to brag a little this week about one of my dealers. Deborah aka The Tattered Cat is not only a finder of great treasures, she is also a great friend. This past week Deborah came down and along with Joy we went to Americasmart for the January show. After two days of walking showroom after showroom and floor after floor, Deborah still stayed on and worked with me in the store all day Sunday before heading home three hours away at 9:00 PM.

A lot of our customers remember Deborah from Lakewood Antiques and still come to the shop just to see what she has brought in. I am lucky to have her as a dealer and even luckier to have her as a great friend.

This past year has been very trying for a lot of small businesses, people have lost jobs, homes and businesses. I appreciate each of you, our loyal customers for all of your support throughout the year.

Your comments about the store have made me realize that I have created an atmosphere which you can come in to and feel like family and I consider many of you just that, my extended family.

Thank you for supporting your small town businesses, it is so very important to us here in McDonough as well as all over the country.
